Level 1 Modules – 120 Credits
Introduction to Islamic Law (20 Credits):
This module aims to introduce the student to the inextricable link between Islam and the Law and to broaden their access to relevant western literature and thus afford them the opportunity to extend the scope of their research. A further principal aim of this module is to prepare the student to address and construct arguments regarding manmade and divine legislation and to present the means not only to justify the latter, but also to further studies in comparative law.
Arabic Grammar and Morphology (20 credits):
The study of the Arabic Language is integral to the Islamic Studies programme at EIHS; the main aim of this module being the enabling of all students to attain a level of fluency that will equip them with the means to read, discuss, recite and understand the primary sources of Islam in Arabic. Emphasis is also placed on the grammatical structure of the language, with a view to imparting the necessary skills to produce essays of quality in Arabic. The module aims to be student-centred and provides opportunity for creativity and confidence building learning activities.
The Sciences of the Qur’an (10 credits):
This module aims to equip the student with the ability to refer quickly and accurately to the Qur’an; this being the primary source of Islamic legislation. In order to strengthen student awareness of the Qur’anic text and its hermeneutics, the course aims to clarify the historical context surrounding the revelation of each verse.
The Science of Hadith (10 credits):
This module aims to examine the development of Hadith, the second primary source of Islamic Law. It introduces the student to the words, deeds and the approved actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This will help develop student awareness of the different classifications of Hadith, the process of their compilation, the rules set down by scholars for the study of this discipline, the importance of the correct chain of transmission and the methodological differences between a number of Hadith corpuses.
Ritual Worship (20 credits):
The aim of this module is to introduce the concept of the five pillars of Islam, upon which the practical application of ritual worship (fiqh al-Ibadat) is based. It is intended that students will learn about the Islamic ideals of co-operation, benevolence and altruism. The module also aims to develop an awareness of the significance of Muslim juristic opinion, both historical and contemporary, as differing schools of thought prescribe some variations in ritual practice.
Qur’anic Recitation (10 credits):
This module aims to introduce the student to the memorisation and accurate recitation of the Qur’an. It intends to familiarise the student with a number of the key theoretical and practical aspects involved in memorising and reciting accurately the 29th and 30th parts of the Qur’an.
The Islamic Faith (10 credits):
This module aims to explore the central tenets of the Islamic Faith (aqidah). Focus will be given to the nature and oneness of God and students will acquire an understanding of a number of theological aspects related to the practice of Islam.
Research and Academic Writing Skills (20 credits):
This module aims to introduce the students to skills that will enable them to access, utilise and reference appropriate material. It aims to develop an autonomous approach to study and presents suggestions for assignment structure and various methods of enquiry. This module intends to highlight the pitfalls that can lead to plagiarism and to inform students of the serious nature of this offence.
